How many times have you heard from your parents that you could not play with your food? Since we were kids right? Yeah it's so annoying when you want to experiment with your food, rip it apart and maybe fry it up a little more. It's why when I discovered Korean BBQ I was filled with joy. I could cook my food and then play with it by trying to put different things on it to compliment the food. Often times my friends would actually draw funny things on the grill.
Interactive food is something I've come to realize that it brings people together in a way that normally you would not see before. The joy of cooking food together and trying new things and I think the fact you see your friends reactions is something I enjoy seeing time and time again. So a new type of food I've found that piqued my interest was Shabu Shabu. I asked my exchange student what it was and she said it was like just boiling meat in broth. Boiling meat in broth? Sounds slightly boring but when I saw the restaurant time and time again I would think about how fun it would be to make your own stew. I think seeing a segment on Eatyourkimchi about it made finally decide it was time to go there.
I've been twice to this Shabu Shabu and I love the service there. I'll be a little fan girl and say the waiters are somewhat my type of Asian when it comes to looks. Hahaha...no there's much more to restaurant than the beautiful people in there. With your entree of meat that you want, whether it'd be beef, chicken or pork or even vegetables, you get a plate full of vegetables and tofu and a large pot of broth. Now the broth can be flavored in different ways. There's kimchi, tonkatsu, miso and so on. You put your meat in when it boils along with the vegetables. As you keep eating it the whole broth is flavored with the beef and vegetables. My favorite part is the putting udon at the end of the meal, cause the noodles just soak up all the flavor and you have perfect udon.
Now all the food quality is up to you since you're cooking this food and not the staff so I better hear no complaints about the food! This Shabu Shabu is located in Rowland Heights off of Fullerton. Service is great and staff are always ready to help you get through your first time eating at a Shabu Shabu. I came on my birthday and got a free ice cream. And...my waiter was adorable. O///O okay enough blushing and fangirling. Enjoy and here's to playing with food!!
