I'm going to spill my ethnicity right here and now. I'm Indonesian and I have a love hate relationship with my country and people. Maybe it's because I have never been acknowledge as Indo during first impressions (I'm usually the chinky Chinese or Korea or even Japanese girl.), but it's hard for me to proud of my own country. I do love their food above all things and their traditional musical instruments.
Now that's out there you probably will think that this whole music review will be biased in my slight disdain for my country. Wrong! I will judging on a purely music and marketing point of view. No one can deny what the industry is trying to do. Now on to the main event.
S4 is a Indonesian pop group that won Galaxy Superstar. What's that? Well it's a competition for a chance to be entered in a agency that has the Korean style training style. This means the agency will train them for a few months to years and them slap them on stage. Cube entertainment has agreed to help Rainbow Bridge (a Korean agency based in Indonesia) promote these boys. I'm going to point this out right now. It's k-pop with Indonesian lyrics. The music is distinctly Korean pop must because of the producer is Korean. Hyuna is featured in this album but she does not appear anywhere in the music video. For all you Hyuna fans sorry she be too sexy for Indonesian television and I'm not saying this because it's a good thing. The album itself is heavy with eletro and I was slightly disappointed that I could not here much of the vocalist. I guess I needed a ballad from them to fairly judge their singing prowess. I'm sad that my country is slowing wanting to copy k-pop. Yes I understand it's popular but I'd like something distinctly Indonesian. For now this group could go far if they created their own music to the Indo community rather than slapping Indonesian lyrics to k-pop sounding songs. Want to check them out? Here's a link to their youtube channel.
Do I need to go over their looks? Uhh...I'll just say they're trying really hard to fit the k-pop image. I just have to say Indonesians have somewhat too hard of features in the wrong places to do it.
