Okay not really...well I'm not sure for all the k-pop fans but judging by the amount of views already out with SNSD's new video, (That could be the fact the same amount of thousands of fans re-watching it.) or the amount of hype in the internet media they receive, I think it's safe to say that they are very popular and will be for a long time.
It's a new year and time to recreate yourself right? Not really...the only thing that changes is probably the many obstacles you've overcame and how much you learned from them. Overall there a lot of things that are kept. But I'm getting off topic. The point I'm trying to make here is SNSD has been for a long time known for their infectious aegyo style songs. It hits fans in a place where the young girl look in a older woman is prized. Basically a slight lolita complex. Their song Gee is what shot them into the top. And in their new album their main concept is showing their past and their future.
These girls start off with the past and show us a song that is a remake of Duffy's Mercy. I will say that they dancing is just right to the beat and defintely sticks the signature style that is SNSD. Leggy moves, colorful skinny jeans, kitty heels and uniform t-shirts are what made SNSD famous. This song was suppose to be actually the song that they would present instead of Gee in 2008 but due to complications they decided to switch it to Gee. Which in my opinion is a good thing because even though international fans might be happy with the familiarity of the melody, it's nice to see original k-pop songs out there. They did add more sexier dance moves using their hips but it's not much to cringe about. One thing that is still present since 2008 is the aegyo smile. (For those who don't know aegyo I'll give you a comparison. It is the actual cutesy shojo acts you see on anime brought to life. Very annoyingly cute actions that sometimes can make people sick. K-pop likes to amplify the meaning of aegyo by maybe 10x than what it really is. Now as you will see a somewhat flashback for SNSD with Dancing Queen. If you want to go see comparisons to Gee see that one first to get a clear idea what they started with.
Fast forward to 2013 and SNSD present I Got a Boy. I had a hard time digesting this song. For one part I think their choreography has improve by ten fold. We no long see much the just the legginess but a strong in your face dance. Filled with more intricate dance moves. Their outfits have changed to more of a hip hop feeling. I will say because this is SM entertainment that their outfits look like most of the members of f(x) would wear aside from Amber. A lot of color and different kind of textures for accessories. Onto the song. I have to say this is where I have trouble fully digesting and I know I'm going to have a lot haters on me later if k-pop fans ever find this. I only liked the melody of the first part of the song. The other parts felt to fluffy to me. But I did like the electronics they added in there. But I will say they stuck with the aegyo image. I don't blame them because that's what they got popular by. I just wonder someday they will have to grow out of that. I mean most of them are reaching mid 20s and it's time for a mature look completely. There comes a time where the aegyo just has to go. As for their vocals I finally can appreciate them on a individual basis. They may not be too clearly individualized but compared when I first met them this is a lot better. On a last note on their look...WHY THE HELL ARE THEY SO SKINNY!! It doesn't scare me or make green with envy but I'm surprised how tiny their waists are. And you clearly see it since all of them wear crop tops. That's the last thing I wanted to point out.
So did the truly change? For the most part I would say no. But they have learned from the past and try to improve themselves while keep to their 'true' selves. Maybe we can actually learn a lesson from them. That despite what other people think about their aegyo style they are being themselves as a group. Though people may say that it's a business but let's look at the core. They're just trying to be what they debuted with so that the change isn't so dramatic and people will say 'oh they're not being true to themselves.' This is what I see and can be somewhat proud of that. Hope you enjoyed a little flashback.
