There was a lot of k-pop music videos released in the past couple of week and it's hard to decide to pick just one to review. This week though I'll discuss a common trend in k-pop music videos while reviewing a couple of them.
A common trend in k-pop music videos and SM entertainment is known for them are the 'Box Sets'. These imply that the group are put in a set and just dance while either panning into their lovely faces or showing off their dance choreography. When this first came about it was okay and then everyone started doing it and it became bland pretty fast. There's no diversity or artistic nature in these types of music videos. Maybe it's because companies can't afford to film on location but there are ways to make this unique. In the next day or two I'll present an example of a music video that did a 'box set' type video but done really well. Today, however, is a different story.
F(x), pronounced like effects, is SM Entertainment street fashion forward group with the quirky sounds. They were the ones that started the trend to have boyish girls or rather asian tomboys in the groups. Take a look at the video and see who I'm talking about. Back to the music. I was slightly disappointed in the music because it sounded like a cheer. The beat and actual music made up for this. It has this sort of mysterious feel that draws one in. As for the vocals this is actual one of my favorite songs to listen to vocals. There isn't that much of that squeaky Asian girl sound. There's a few harmony in there and as usual of kpop videos there's a splash of rapping done by Amber.
As for the video... I hide my face. The choreography was nice don't get me wrong but nothing is else appealed to me. It was a box set music video. This is a perfect example how box sets are boring. Just the group dancing and showing off their sexy faces. There's no interaction with the outside world which would be nice to see more of out of SM Entertainment's artists. Well what can you do, SM Entertainment is known for these types of videos and I'm sure we'll see more of them.
Watch it here and tell me what you think!
