Empowering the Woman . . . or Not? 2NE1 vs Ailee

It seems k-pop this year not only dished out on the massive return of solo female artist (Ailee, Lee Hi...others that I forget oh right IU) and slews of groups that emphasis on the statement that they are rebelling on what is stereotypical Korean women. Let's just put a complete umbrella on this on most Asian women. Seems great right? I mean Americans always teach women about empowering themselves stepping out from the kitchen (Man: Maketh me a sandwich wench! Woman: Hell no do it yourself I got pay the bills! *starts busting Destiny Child songs..'Can you pay my bills..daa da da uhh....All the Independent woman throw your hands at me...*) Ahem...so...yeah go America. Anyways so is this a good thing?

Why do I care? Cause k-pop is moving where Korean society is moving towards. And in this category who has the best song and video and who has the worst? Drum roll please!!

*cues drumroll*

2NE1!!!

Was that really a surprise? Seriously? Those girls are badass with fierce fashion. And always bust out with music that is very empowering while giving you something to freakin dance to. The song though that hits people in a weird way is there song Ugly. Yes in their lyrics they repeatedly say 'I think I'm ugly.'  Even they clearly aren't....that's not the point though! They're telling people there are girls that think this way and announcing to world hey girls do not look like the stick figures on tv with perfect hair and skin. There are women out there with very raw lives. And of course in their music video they ruin a perfectly good set with awesome glowing paint. Telling the word 'See ugly is beautiful.'

Now that we've seen the best. Let's go onto the worse. In terms of song and music video I couldn't find something that had both. What I did find was a very conflicting song with a music video.

Behold Ailee!! Dubbed the Beyonce of Korea due to the fact she was able to sing Beyonce's song Halo. She was trained under Wheesung (last time I heard about this man was a track on SE7EN's old album when he was still in YG). Her second single throughly made me scratch my head. It's called I'll Show you. So this single was literally showing her fans what she can do as an artist. Don't get me wrong. She has amazingly strong vocals and good charisma. My problem is that in her music video she's telling the guy 'I'll find a better man, and show you that I'm happier than you.', yet !! Yet!! In the end she returns to the guy that dumped her for looking like a plain girl. Okay Ailee seriously? You go all wardrobe change and look like a star, go around rejecting all men who pass you by as you walk down the halls of your school then get back with the guy that hurt you? What does that say to little girls? And really? Let's look at it this way. Aren't you kind of stating a little that you can only get a guy with girly looks? That 'plain' girls don't stand a chance? See my head scratcher? I will repeat though for those who are going to bash on me. She has amazing vocals (maybe cause she was raised and trained mostly in America? Land of the hip-hop and r&b?). So there's my confusion. Come check it out for yourself.

This is me signing out. See ya later !!

  1. interstingly enough in America we have had similar things put in the media like take for instance the movie "She's all that" i think its kindd of a common thread in society

  2. The issue I have problem with 2NE1 song "I'm think I'm ugly" is they didn't live their message... I mean look at Park Bom she did plastic surgery......

How should I describe myself? Should I go into a long rant about me and what I like? Or is a list easier for your eyes? I think a small paragraph should do.

Music is my passion with modern Asian music, such as k-pop, j-pop and j-rock etc., writing is my joy and photography is my growing love. Food is the best way to socialize and fashion is my way to know that I put my shirt on correctly.
